Most docking stations are designed to add a few USB ports, a display output, ethernet and charging to a laptop. The TS5 Plus is not really that product. With twenty ports, 10-gigabit networking and a 330W power supply, it is closer to a desktop I/O expansion system — and that means it should be judged against your whole workstation rather than by counting ports against cheaper docks.
So the question this review tries to answer is not whether it is the most capable dock available. It is whether your workstation can actually use enough of that capability to justify paying for it.
This is a research-based review. Nobody at Comfort Desk Hub has had this dock on a desk, so nothing below is written as a firsthand claim about speed, heat, noise or reliability. Specifications were verified September 2026 against CalDigit’s own product page and US store listing, and independent professional testing is attributed by name where it appears. Check this before you order
The TS5 Plus does not work with ordinary USB-C laptops
CalDigit’s current documentation states that the TS5 Plus is not compatible with USB-C host computers running at 5Gb/s or 10Gb/s. A USB-C shaped port on your laptop is not enough. The host has to implement Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 on a Mac, USB4 or USB4 v2. This is a real difference from the standard TS5, which does support ordinary USB-C hosts.
It also does not work with Thunderbolt 3 Windows PCs
CalDigit lists Thunderbolt 3 support for Macs only. Thunderbolt 3 Windows machines are excluded outright — not degraded, but unsupported. If that describes your computer, the standard TS5 supports it and this dock does not.
What makes the TS5 Plus different
A typical dock provides a few USB ports, a display output, ethernet and charging. The TS5 Plus combines Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth, high host power delivery, ten high-speed USB ports, 10-gigabit networking, dedicated display connectivity and high-output downstream charging in one device.
That combination is the product. Individually, each feature is available for less money elsewhere; the argument for this dock is that consolidating all of them removes a charger, a hub, a network adapter, a card reader and a display adapter from the desk at once. Whether that argument works depends entirely on how many of those things you were going to own anyway.

Thunderbolt 5, in practical terms
Thunderbolt 5 supplies 80Gb/s of bidirectional bandwidth under normal operation. CalDigit also specifies Bandwidth Boost, which can provide up to 120Gb/s in the display-heavy direction by reallocating lanes when additional video bandwidth is needed.
It is worth being precise about that 120Gb/s figure, because it is easy to misread: it is not a number every workload receives. It applies when the dock needs extra bandwidth for displays, and it comes at the expense of the other direction. The honest summary is that Thunderbolt 5 matters most for multiple high-resolution displays, high-refresh displays, very fast external storage and bandwidth-intensive professional peripherals.
For a keyboard, a mouse and a webcam, Thunderbolt 5 offers essentially no practical advantage over far less expensive connections. CalDigit associates the dock’s 64Gb/s PCIe 4.0 path with external storage speeds up to 6,200MB/s, and 9to5Mac frames the same generational change as roughly 6,000MB/s against 3,000MB/s on Thunderbolt 4 — a real difference if you work off external SSDs, and irrelevant if you do not.
140W laptop charging
CalDigit specifies up to 140W of host power delivery, and positions that figure for demanding 16-inch MacBook Pro configurations. 9to5Mac reports the dock delivering full 140W charging to a 16-inch MacBook Pro while simultaneously powering other peripherals, which the 330W supply is what makes possible.
What that does not mean is that every laptop will draw 140W. Charging depends on the laptop’s own power requirements, its USB Power Delivery implementation, the cable in use and operating conditions. The useful way to read the specification is as headroom: it is very unlikely to be the limiting factor in your setup, which is not the same as a promise about your particular machine.
Downstream charging
This is one of the clearer separations from cheaper docks. Each downstream Thunderbolt 5 port supplies up to 36W, as does the front USB-C port; the remaining USB-C and USB-A ports supply 7.5W. In practice 36W is enough to charge a tablet, a phone, a portable monitor, an external SSD or a camera at a useful rate rather than trickling.
Do not assume every device negotiates the maximum, though — and one specific caution from independent testing is worth carrying: 9to5Mac found a Rodecaster Duo audio interface would not power from the 36W Thunderbolt downstream ports, but worked correctly from the USB-C data port. Power negotiation between a dock and a peripheral is not always predictable from the wattage figure alone.
USB connectivity
Ten USB ports, all at 10Gb/s — five USB-A and five USB-C. For a permanent workstation that is the feature most likely to be used every day, because it is the one that removes secondary hubs from the desk. A keyboard, mouse, external SSD, audio interface, printer, card reader and phone can all stay connected without anything being unplugged to make room.

Dual USB controllers
CalDigit states the TS5 Plus uses dual USB controllers to increase USB performance. The concept is straightforward: heavy USB traffic does not have to compete through a single controller the way it does on simpler docks. We are not going to attach a throughput figure to that, because we have not measured it and CalDigit does not publish one in those terms. It matters more for storage, video capture and other high-speed peripherals than for keyboards and mice. Note also that CalDigit states the second USB controller, like ethernet, requires a Thunderbolt host or a USB4 host with PCIe support.
10 Gigabit Ethernet
This is one of the strongest premium differentiators on the dock, and also the one most often bought without benefit. CalDigit specifies 10GbE, backward compatible with 5GbE, 2.5GbE and 1GbE.
It is genuinely valuable for:
- NAS users moving large volumes of data
- Video editors working from network storage
- Large file transfers across a local network
- Professional local networks already running multi-gigabit
It is of no practical value for:
- Anyone on standard 1-gigabit home networking
- Ordinary broadband use, where your internet connection is the limit
- Anyone whose router, switch or NAS does not support multi-gigabit networking
10-gigabit ethernet has no practical value unless the rest of your network can use it. A 10GbE port connected to a gigabit switch behaves exactly like a gigabit port on a much cheaper dock. If you are unsure what your network runs at, that is the specification to check before this one.
Display support
The important part
Your computer determines the display limit
No dock can drive more displays than the host computer supports. Actual capability depends on your computer, its processor, its GPU, its Thunderbolt implementation, the operating system, and the resolution and refresh rate you are asking for. CalDigit publishes a per-host table rather than a single number, and so do we.

CalDigit states the dock supports up to dual 4K at 240Hz on compatible Macs and up to triple 4K at 144Hz on supported Thunderbolt 5 Windows PCs. Those are ceilings on particular hardware, not general capabilities — and the number of displays is a separate question from the resolution and refresh rate each one runs at. DisplayPort 2.1
The dedicated DisplayPort 2.1 output matters for a practical reason rather than a headline one: a monitor connected there does not consume one of the downstream Thunderbolt ports. That is more valuable on this dock than it sounds, because the TS5 Plus has two downstream Thunderbolt ports where the standard TS5 has three. Maximum resolution and refresh rate still depend on what your computer can drive rather than on the port alone. There is no HDMI output — 9to5Mac notes that an HDMI display needs an active adapter.
Mac and Windows compatibility
CalDigit requires macOS 15 or above and Windows 11 or above, and Windows users need to install the ethernet driver. Supported hosts are Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, USB4 v2 and Thunderbolt 3 on Mac. On a Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 3 host, CalDigit states you receive half the Thunderbolt 5 performance — expected, since the host sets the ceiling, but worth weighing if you are buying this dock for a Thunderbolt 4 laptop and paying for bandwidth you cannot reach yet.
The Apple Silicon picture is the one most people get wrong, and it is not about the dock at all. A base M-series Mac drives one external display no matter what it is plugged into. Pro and Max chips raise that limit, and the current M5 Pro and M5 Max raise it further. Those are processor limits, not dock faults.

Card readers and audio
SD 4.0 UHS-II and microSD 4.0 UHS-II readers are built in — genuinely valuable to photographers, videographers and drone users who offload cards daily, and close to irrelevant for ordinary office work. Three audio connections are provided: a front 3.5mm combo jack, a rear output and a rear input, which can consolidate speakers, a microphone and a headset onto the dock rather than the laptop. We are not going to characterise how any of it sounds, since that would require testing we have not done.
TS5 Plus vs. the standard TS5
This is the comparison that decides most purchases, and it is not a simple better-or-worse. These are two current products rather than two tiers of one, and the differences run in both directions.

Two rows in that table are easy to skim past and matter more than the rest. The standard TS5 has three downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports against the Plus’s two — so if you connect a USB-C monitor, it consumes one of only two on the more expensive dock. And the TS5 works with ordinary USB-C host computers and Thunderbolt 3 Windows PCs, which the TS5 Plus does not. On those two counts the cheaper dock is not a compromise; it is the more compatible product.
Who should pay extra for the Plus?
The roughly $100 premium makes its strongest case when you actually need one or more of:
- 10-gigabit ethernet, with a network that can use it
- More USB connectivity than the TS5’s two USB-A ports allow
- 36W downstream charging rather than 15W
- Dual USB controllers for heavy simultaneous peripheral traffic
- A dedicated DisplayPort output that does not use a Thunderbolt port
- Maximum workstation expansion, bought once and kept for years

TS5 Plus vs. the TS4
The TS4 is CalDigit’s Thunderbolt 4 dock: eighteen ports, 98W host charging, three Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40Gb/s, three USB-C and five USB-A at 10Gb/s, and 2.5-gigabit ethernet. Against the TS5 Plus it is a generation behind on interface, charging and networking.
That does not make it obsolete, and we are not going to say it does. For a Thunderbolt 4 laptop that will never see Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth, the TS4 already supplies more connectivity than most desks use, and the price difference is real money. The reason to buy the newer dock is headroom you have an actual plan for — a Thunderbolt 5 machine now or soon, multi-gigabit networking, or displays that need the bandwidth.
TS5 Plus vs. a value hub
At the other end of our docking station guide sits the Anker 565 USB-C Hub (11-in-1), at roughly a seventh of the price. These are not competitors so much as answers to different questions, and both belong in the guide.
The CalDigit is for maximum connectivity, Thunderbolt 5 systems, multi-monitor workstations, 10-gigabit networking, high-power laptops and long-term expansion. The Anker is for mainstream home-office needs at a significantly lower cost with simpler peripheral requirements — one monitor, a wired network and a tidy desk. A buyer whose needs the Anker meets does not get a better working day by spending seven times more.
TS5 Plus vs. a monitor with a built-in hub
This is a genuine home-office architecture decision rather than a product comparison, and it is worth making deliberately. A dock plus any display keeps the two on independent replacement cycles, gives far more ports, allows more network flexibility, and lets you change monitor without replacing your dock.
A hub monitor such as the Dell U3225QE or the 27-inch U2725QE takes the opposite approach: fewer devices, a cleaner desk, monitor and dock combined, and potentially less total cable complexity. It also means your dock and your display retire together, and monitors usually outlive docks.

Is Thunderbolt 5 necessary?
For most office users, no. Email, a browser, Office applications, a webcam and a keyboard and mouse do not require Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth, and will feel identical through a dock costing a fraction as much.
Thunderbolt 5 becomes genuinely useful with:
- Multiple high-resolution displays
- Very fast external storage
- High-bandwidth professional devices
- Future workstation expansion you can actually describe
Desk footprint and power supply
The dock measures 6.10 by 1.85 by 5.03 inches and weighs 1.98 lb, which is compact in width and tall enough to stand vertically on a desk. 9to5Mac notes it is noticeably larger than both the TS3 Plus and the TS4. We are not going to state whether CalDigit supports horizontal placement, because we could not verify that from its documentation, and guessing at manufacturer support is exactly how a review becomes unreliable.
The 330W external power supply is what enables 140W host charging alongside 36W downstream ports, and it is also a large brick that has to live somewhere. Worth being honest about a claim docks often make: this dock reduces the number of cables connected to your laptop to one, but it does not reduce the number of cables on your desk. The host cable, the power supply, display cables, ethernet and every peripheral still terminate somewhere. Build, firmware and warranty
CalDigit maintains current firmware, utilities and Windows ethernet drivers for the TS5 Plus, with updates published through 2026. That matters more on a premium dock than it might seem: Thunderbolt, Power Delivery, ethernet and operating-system compatibility all evolve, and a dock bought as a long-term desk fixture depends on the manufacturer continuing to support it. The warranty is two years. That is reasonable, though modest set against the price and against the ten-year coverage some premium desk hardware carries — and we have no basis for predicting how long any individual unit will last.

Is the CalDigit TS5 Plus worth it?
It is worth considering when you can actually exploit its premium features. Its strongest case is a high-end Thunderbolt workstation where 140W charging matters, numerous high-speed peripherals are in use, multi-gigabit networking is real rather than theoretical, multiple displays are required, and future expansion is a plan rather than a hope.
Do not evaluate the price against other docks alone. Set it against the hardware it may replace — a charger, a USB hub, an ethernet adapter, an SD reader, a DisplayPort adapter and a Thunderbolt hub. For the right workstation, that consolidation can justify the premium. For a light office setup, it will not, and the arithmetic is not close: simpler docks handle the same keyboard, mouse, webcam and single-monitor workload identically.
Final verdict
The CalDigit TS5 Plus is not the docking station most home-office users need. It is the dock for users who have outgrown ordinary docking stations.
Its value comes from combining Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth, 140W host charging, extensive USB connectivity, 10-gigabit networking and advanced display support in one permanent workstation device. If those features solve actual problems in your setup, it is an unusually capable hub and there is very little else like it.
If they do not, the standard TS5 — or a much less expensive USB-C or Thunderbolt dock — will deliver better value, and in the case of an ordinary USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 Windows laptop, the TS5 is not merely better value but the only one of the two that will work at all.

Buy the newer dock for headroom you have a plan for, not to avoid owning older hardware.

Only for buyers who need the capabilities specific to the Plus: 10-gigabit ethernet, more USB ports, 36W downstream charging, dual USB controllers or a dedicated DisplayPort.
