One thing to settle before anything else, because it is where most LX Pro research goes wrong. This review covers the Ergotron LX Pro Desk Arm for a SINGLE monitor on the standard pole — part family 45-682. Ergotron sells several close relatives under the same name: a Tall Pole version, Dual Direct, Dual Stacking and Dual Side-by-Side configurations, and a separate grommet-mount SKU. Those are different products with different capacities and different part numbers, and their specifications are not interchangeable with this one. The legacy LX (45-241) is a different product again.

Monitor arms are easy products to underestimate. A cheap arm and a premium arm look much alike in a product photo, and both hold a screen in the air. The differences show up in adjustment quality, how much weight the mechanism can actually balance, what mounting hardware is in the box, and whether the monitor is still exactly where you left it in two years. What Is New With the LX Pro

This section matters more than it normally would, because a great deal of the monitor-arm advice still in circulation — including buying guides published within the last year — describes the original Ergotron LX. Ergotron positions the LX Pro as an evolution of that platform rather than an unrelated product, and the mechanical substance is recognisably the same family: a constant-force gas spring, 13in of lift, up to 25in of reach, aluminum construction and a ten-year warranty.

The verifiable changes on the standard single arm are these:

  • A different working range. The LX Pro is specified at 4–22 lb where the legacy LX was 7–25 lb — a lower floor and a lower ceiling, not simply "more capacity".
  • Wider tilt: 85° total (+70° / −15°), against 75° up and 5° down on the LX.
  • A tension-level indicator, which gives a visual reference when counterbalancing the arm instead of leaving spring force to trial and error.
  • A built-in rotation stop that can limit the base arm’s swing to 180° where a wall or a divider is in the way.

None of that makes the legacy LX a poor product. It is still a well-made arm with the same warranty length, it is still widely sold, and if it is discounted and its 7–25 lb range suits your monitor better, it remains a reasonable purchase.

The practical reading: if your monitor sits between 4 and 7 lb, the LX Pro is the one that can balance it. If it sits between 22 and 25 lb, the legacy LX is. Between 7 and 22 lb, both are in range, and the decision comes down to price, the grommet mount and whether the tension indicator is worth anything to you.

Monitor Compatibility

This is the section most worth reading slowly, because compatibility is not a single number. Screen diagonal is the figure everyone checks and the least useful of the three. Before ordering, verify all of these:

  • Monitor weight WITHOUT the original desk stand — the stand comes off when the monitor goes on the arm
  • VESA mounting pattern — the LX Pro takes 75 x 75 mm and 100 x 100 mm
  • Display dimensions, particularly on a wide panel that has to clear the pole when it swings
  • Desk mounting surface — thickness, material and what sits behind the desk

Screen size

Ergotron currently specifies displays up to 34in for this arm. A 24in monitor is usually straightforward if the weight and VESA pattern are met. A 27in panel is the common productivity pairing and the size this arm is most often bought for. A 32in display can be a strong fit provided it stays within the weight specification — many do not. A 34in ultrawide needs the most careful checking of all, because the size limit and the weight limit are independent constraints and plenty of ultrawides clear the first while failing the second. Do not assume every 34in ultrawide is compatible.

Weight capacity, in both directions

The specified range is 4–22 lb, and the minimum is not a formality. A constant-force gas spring is counterbalanced within a range: too much weight and the arm sags, too little and it drifts upward and will not hold the position you set. This is why "buy the arm with the biggest number" is bad advice — an arm rated far above your monitor is not safer, it is simply harder to balance. Ergotron’s own HX makes the point at the other extreme: its spring cannot be de-tensioned below 20 lb, so a light panel physically will not sit still on it.

The number to look up is the panel-only weight from the manufacturer’s specification page, not the shipping weight on the retail listing, which includes the stand and the box.

Range of Motion

Height adjustment

Ergotron specifies 13in of vertical travel. Height is the adjustment that does the ergonomic work: it is what lets you put the top of the screen near eye level rather than tilting your head down at a monitor sitting on a fixed stand. Where that 13in lands depends on your desk height, the pole and the monitor’s own mounting-point position, so treat the figure as travel available rather than a promise about final screen height.

Extension

Up to 25in of reach, which is generous for a single arm. Extension matters most on deep desks, where the arm has to bring the display forward from a back-edge clamp, and on desks where the monitor needs to be pushed back out of the way for handwriting or paperwork. On a shallow desk you will never use the full range.

Tilt

Ergotron specifies 85° of total tilt (+70° / −15°). In practice tilt is what you use to kill a ceiling-light reflection or to square the screen to your eye line once the height is set — small adjustments, made rarely, but irritating to live without.

Pan and rotation

The specification sheet states 180° of monitor pan and 360° of base arm rotation, with a rotation stop that halves the base swing to 180° where a wall or divider makes full rotation a hazard. Some retailer listings quote 360° pan; we have flagged the discrepancy in the spec table rather than picking the more flattering number. Screen rotation between landscape and portrait is available at the VESA head — plan cable slack for it, because a rotating display needs enough length at the head to complete the turn without straining connectors.

Constant Force Motion Technology

Stripped of marketing language, the design objective is simple: the monitor should move when you deliberately move it and stay exactly where you put it when you do not. That is harder than it sounds, because a spring stiff enough to hold a heavy panel is also stiff enough to make small adjustments a two-handed job, and a spring soft enough for one-finger movement lets the screen drift.

Ergotron’s answer is a counterbalance tuned within the arm’s specified weight range, with a tension-level indicator so you can set spring force against a visual reference instead of guessing. Ergotron also states that its monitor-arm lift mechanisms are tested to 10,000 cycles — that is a manufacturer test, not a Comfort Desk Hub measurement, and we report it as such. We have not tested this arm’s movement quality firsthand and make no claim about how it compares in the hand to any other arm.

Stability

Monitor movement is the complaint that dominates owner discussion of every arm ever made, and most of it misattributes the cause. Before blaming an arm, it is worth separating where movement actually originates:

  • The arm itself — joint play, or a spring set to the wrong tension
  • The desktop — a thin or hollow-core surface flexing at the clamp point
  • The desk frame — a sit-stand base with inherent sway, especially at standing height
  • The floor — an uneven or springy floor under a lightly built desk
  • The display — a large panel on a long extension has real leverage behind it

Typing transmits vibration through the desk to whatever is standing on it, arm or no arm. We have not measured this arm, so we will not publish a stability verdict dressed up as a test result. Build Quality

Ergotron builds the LX Pro from aluminum with integrated cable channels along the arm, and sells it in four finishes: matte black, white, dark grey and polished aluminum. The parts that decide whether an arm ages well are the ones under constant load — the joints, the tension mechanism, the pole and base, the clamp, and the monitor attachment plate and its hardware.

Build quality matters here in a specific way that it does not for a static stand. A monitor arm is a mechanism that gets adjusted, knocked, leaned on and loaded continuously for years. Wear shows up as creep — the slow forward droop that has the screen an inch lower than you set it, month after month — rather than as sudden failure. Installation

We have not assembled this arm and will not invent an assembly time. The general workflow for an arm of this type runs:

This deserves as much attention as the monitor specifications, and gets far less. An arm that does not fit your desk is not a compatibility footnote — it is a return.

Desktop thickness

The included two-piece clamp is specified for surfaces 0.4–2.4in (10–60 mm) thick. Thick butcher-block and some solid-wood desktops exceed that, and a desk with a rim, a lip or a deep apron under the edge can defeat a clamp that the raw thickness figure says will fit. Measure at the exact point you intend to clamp.

Desktop strength

A monitor arm concentrates its entire load at one small point on the desk edge, which is a very different demand from a stand that spreads a monitor’s weight across a footprint. Thin, hollow-core, laminate-over-particleboard and glass desktops all deserve a second look before clamping. Glass in particular is not a surface to guess about.

Rear clearance

A clamp needs the desk edge to be accessible, which means the desk cannot be pushed flush against the wall, and the arm needs room behind it to swing. Ergotron does not publish an under-desk clearance figure for this model, so measure the space beneath your desk edge rather than relying on a number from a review — including this one.

If the clamp will not work, the grommet mount is the alternative — but note that it is a separate purchase on this model, and that drilling a grommet hole voids many desk warranties.

Standing desks

Monitor arms and sit-stand desks work well together, because the screen travels with the desktop instead of being reset at every height change. Good cable management on a moving mount has to do more than look tidy — it has to keep enough slack for the arm’s full travel, avoid strain on connectors at both ends, keep cables clear of the joints where they can be pinched, allow the full height range without tugging, and accommodate desk travel on a sit-stand setup. Monitor Positioning and Desk Space

A factory monitor stand offers height adjustment within a narrow band, some tilt, and nothing else. An arm makes height, distance, tilt and orientation independently adjustable, and lets you change any of them in seconds rather than treating the screen as furniture. Ergotron specifies a ten-year warranty on the LX Pro single-arm model. Verify the current terms before purchasing, because warranty length is the specification manufacturers revise most quietly.

Warranty length carries more weight on a moving mechanical product than on a stationary stand. A monitor stand either works or does not, and mostly it just sits there. A gas-spring arm has a component that is under load every day of its life and degrades gradually. Price
