If your desk is fixed-height and taller than ideal for your body, a keyboard tray mounts underneath the desktop and gives you a lower, correctly positioned typing surface — without needing to replace the desk itself.
Who actually needs one
Keyboard trays make the most sense for shorter users at standard or tall desks, where lowering the chair enough to fix elbow angle would leave your feet dangling. If a footrest and correct chair height already get your elbows to 90 degrees, you likely don't need a tray.
What to check before buying
- Clearance under your desk — measure before buying, since not all desks have room for a tray mechanism

- Weight capacity if you plan to rest a mouse or wrist rest on the same tray
Measure first, then choose
This is the one category on the site where we put the checklist before the products, because compatibility decides the purchase more than quality does. An excellent tray that will not mount to your desk is worth nothing, and almost every returned tray is a fitment problem. Ten minutes with a tape measure settles it.
Clear flat underside depth
The number that decides everything. Measure from the front edge backwards until you hit anything — a crossbar, a leg bracket, a cable tray, a drawer box, a modesty panel. Under 12in rules out every track-based tray; 12–14in takes an 11in track; 22in or more takes a standard 21in track, which is what allows full retraction. Subtract an inch or so of leeway, then pick the next track down.
Will you drill, and can the desk take screws?
The UPLIFT, iMovR and Humanscale trays all screw into the desk underside. If the answer is glass, rental, or absolutely not, the clamp-on VIVO is your only option here.
Front edge thickness and profile (clamp-on only)
The VIVO clamps 0.5in to 3.4in. Then run your hand along the underside of the front edge: a bull-nose, apron, lip or edge trim stops a C-clamp seating flat, and that kills more clamp-on installs than thickness does.
Clear front-edge width (clamp-on only)
About 33 inches for the VIVO — the tray plus both clamps. Check nothing else is already clamped there, including a monitor arm.
Existing drawers
A pencil drawer or factory keyboard drawer occupying the mounting zone disqualifies every screw-mounted tray. There is no workaround short of removing it.
Standing-desk crossbar
If you have one you need the iMovR Trackless, the UPLIFT track spacer, or a clamp-on that never reaches back that far. A standard track bolted straight to a crossbar desk will not retract.
Knee clearance after installation
Add the tray’s lowest drop to your seat height before you commit. The Humanscale can sit 5.5in below its track and the VIVO up to 7in below the desk surface — confirm you still have thigh clearance.

A note on evidence before the products. Mainstream technology press does not review keyboard trays — we looked, and there is essentially nothing. The one outlet doing hands-on tray testing is operated by a tray manufacturer, so we used its published measurements but not its rankings. What follows rests on manufacturer specification sheets, retailer spec sheets and warranty documents, cross-checked where they disagreed. Five bracket positions at 0.6-inch intervals let the tray sit anywhere from a quarter-inch to seven inches below the desk surface, so you can genuinely dial in height rather than accept one fixed drop. The honest limitation is tilt: VIVO does not specify any tilt adjustment, and we are treating it as flat only rather than claiming a figure. If negative tilt is the reason you want a tray, this is not the product. If clearing the desktop and lowering your hands is the reason, it does that for around seventy dollars with a three-year warranty.

Conventional trays need twelve to twenty-three inches of uninterrupted flat underside for their track, and that is precisely what standing desks do not have, because the frame crossbar and leg brackets are in the way. This one has no track at all. It bolts to a mounting bracket roughly 4.2 by 6.25 inches, so it needs only a small patch of solid underside near the front edge, then rotates a full 360 degrees to swing out of the way rather than retracting backwards. Adjustment is respectable: 5.73 inches of height range sitting 1.25 to 6.98 inches below the desk, plus +10 to −15 degrees of tilt, with printed height and tilt gauges so you can return to a setting. A second VIVO worth knowing about
The MOUNT-KB05HB above keeps the no-drill slot because clamping is the whole point of it — but VIVO also makes a screw-mounted tray, the MOUNT-KB03B, and the two are different products rather than variants of one. The KB03B bolts to the underside of the desktop, which rules it out for renters and glass tops, and in exchange it offers what the clamp-on model does not specify at all: tilt, from +6 to −22 degrees, plus 360-degree rotation. It is the cheaper of the two at around seventy dollars, on a smaller 25 by 10 inch tray with a lower 4.4 lb capacity.
If negative tilt is the reason you want a tray and you are willing to drill, it is the one to look at — but it needs 14.25 inches of clear flat underside for its track, and on most standing desks it will not fit without VIVO’s separate spacer.
